If you’re just starting out with essential oils, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. I truly believe that the biggest hurdle to getting started is your own learning curve.

To that end, my goal is to provide resources, tips, information, recipes and how-tos to help you lower your own curve and help you get oily! In this post, we'll look at what I think are the top
five oils to have on hand and where to keep them in your house.

Now, that last part might seem silly, but I've found that having certain essential oils in my kitchen, my laundry room, or my medicine cabinet makes it so easy to grab them when I need them.

Whichever oils you decide to buy, please take care to get only the best quality. They may seem expensive but, with essential oils, you really do get what you pay for. Cheaper oils may be synthetic, or may be padded with synthetic oils or diluted with a carrier oil and won’t have the beneficial effects of pure oils. They may also contain fillers, pesticides or artificial ingredients that you don't want to be putting in, on or around your body. If you are interested in the brand of oils I prefer, you can contact me here.

Ready for my top ten? In no particular order, here they are:

1. Protective Blend

  • What it is: a blend of Wild Orange, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary
  • What it's good for: Supports healthy immune and respiratory function, Protects against environmental threats, Supports the body’s natural antioxidant defenses, Promotes healthy circulation, Energizing and uplifting aroma
  • How I use it: I tend to keep this oil in my medicine cabinet. 3-4 drops go in my diffuser when we've been around someone with an illness or we feel like something is coming on. My little girls put on their "tickles" in the morning with a roller bottle every day before socks and shoes. I tend to use it on my pulse points. I also take this internally using the beadlets when I feel like something is coming on.
  • safety: This can be used aromatically, topically and internally. It can cause some sensitivity, especially for kids, so you definitely want to dilute it for use with children, and also for adults.

2. Respiratory Blend
  • What it is: a blend of Laurel Leaf, Eucalyptus Leaf, Peppermint Plant, Melaleuca Leaf, Lemon Peel, Ravensara Leaf, Cardamom Seed essential oils
  • What it's good for: Maintains feelings of clear airways and easy breathing, Help eases cough, promotes a restful night’s sleep, helps minimize the effects of seasonal threats
  • How I use it: I tend to keep this one in my medicine cabinet. 3-4 drops go in my diffuser when we've got sniffles and snotty noses. I diffuse this at night with Lavender or Frankincense so my girls can breathe easily through the night. I use a roller bottle on my girls chests or swipe across their foreheads to help keep things moving. I also use it in an inhaler for on the go support to clear my airways.
  • safety: This can be used aromatically or topically. It is a sensitive oil, especially for kids, so you definitely want to dilute it for use with children, and also for adults when using it in a roller.

3. Frankincense
  • What it is: a single oil steam distilled from the resin of a tree, sourced from Oman and Somalia, it is anti-inflammatory, astringent and antiseptic properties
  • What it's good for: Supports healthy cellular function, Promotes feelings of relaxation, Reduces the appearance of skin imperfections
  • How I use it: How don't I use this one! I would have a bottle everywhere if I could. I love this in my oil facial cleanser, I put it in the bummie butter I make for my girls, I use it in blends for my own body butter, I add it to rollers to help enhance effectiveness, I diffuse it in the morning when I'm feeling a little off, I place a drop under my tongue to support brain and cell health, and probably more I'm not thinking of at the moment!
  • safety: This can be used aromatically, topically, and internally. It is a neat oil, which means it can be used without dilution.

4. Melaleuca
  • What it is: a single oil steam distilled from the leaf of the tree melaleuca alternifolia, sourced from Australia, sometimes known as tea tree it is antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral and antiseptic.

I also use it on a cotton ball to help promote ear drainage by swiping around the ear and down the neck
  • safety: This oil, like Frank, can be used aromatically, topically, and internally. It is a neat oil, which means it can be used without dilution.

I keep this in my kitchen or in my purse and roller it down my neck, across my shoulders, and massage on my temples when I need to release and relax
  • safety: This can be used aromatically & topically. It is a a pre-diluted roller, but still may cause some sensitivity, so check on your inner arm first

Cilantro has been researched for it's effectiveness to chelate (help remove) heavy metals from the body, which immunizations and antibiotics can contain. I add it to smoothies for myself and roller on my girls feet or spine after a round of shots or anti-bs.
  • safety: This can be used aromatically, topically, and internally. It is a neat oil, which means it can be used without dilution, but always dilute for kids.
